چکیده

To date, mapping of femoral head damage on a global implant level has been limited to representation by standard surface roughness parameters, usually the average roughness, Ra. Attempts to relate average regional roughness parameters to clinical wear rates however, have proven difficult [1]. Average surface roughness alone fails to suitably describe scratch damage as observed in retrievals, because that measure is unable to distinguish between large groups of fine scratches versus one or a few severe scratches.

Third-body damage of prosthetic heads in total hip replacement: combined experimental and computational study

Introduction. In artificial hip joints, the roughening of the femoral head has been associated to higher wear rates of the polymeric cup, eventually leading to osteolysis and implant failure. The increase of the femoral head roughness is strongly influenced by the presence of abrasive particulate entrapped between the articulating surfaces (Bauer et al., 1994 and Raimondi et al., 2000). This da...

Tribology and total hip arthroplasty implants.

Define tribology and discuss its effect on total hip arthroplasty (THA). Tribology is defined as the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion and includes the principles of friction, lubrication, and wear of implant materials. Tribology of the articulating materials in THA is the most important issue for long-term survival of the implants because the fixation of implants either with o...

Failure of a metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty from progressive osteolysis.

Ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear, debris-induced osteolysis is a frequent cause of failure of total hip arthroplasty. Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty eliminates the generation of UHMWPE particulate debris. Although the volumetric wear of a metal-on-metal articulation may be lower than a metal-UHMWPE articulation, the number of particles may be higher. Osteolysis can ...

Staphylococcus aureus Colonization in Patients Undergoing Total Hip or Knee Arthroplasty and Costeffectiveness of Decolonization Programme

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection is a devastating complication of total joint arthroplasty. It seems that thepatient’s skin, nose, throat, and urine are important sites for microbial colonization. Colonization with staphylococcusaureus, especially methicillin resistant increases the risk of periprosthetic joint infection. The aim of this study was toassess the prevalence of staphyloco...
